Essaouira

Essaouira is considered one of the safest cities in Morocco for tourists. Its small size, relaxed atmosphere, and strong tradition of welcoming visitors make it particularly comfortable for solo travelers and families alike. The medina is easy to navigate and far less hectic than those of Marrakesh or Fes. As always, standard travel precautions apply, such as keeping valuables secure and being aware of your surroundings after dark.

Two to three days is the perfect amount of time to explore Essaouira. One day covers the medina, the sea ramparts, the harbour, and the beach, while a second day allows for a more relaxed pace — browsing the souks, visiting the Skala de la Ville, and enjoying a long seafood lunch by the water. A third day is ideal for a kitesurfing lesson, a camel ride on the beach, or a day trip to the nearby argan cooperative.

The best time to visit Essaouira is between April and June or September and October, when the weather is warm and sunny without the strong winds that characterise the summer months. July and August are peak windsurfing and kitesurfing season, drawing wind sports enthusiasts from across Europe, but the constant Atlantic breeze can make beach relaxation less comfortable. Winter is mild and quiet, with fewer tourists and a more authentic local atmosphere.

Staying inside the medina is the most atmospheric and recommended option in Essaouira. The city's riads and guesthouses are concentrated within the whitewashed walls, putting you within walking distance of the ramparts, the souks, and the harbour. For travelers who prefer more space and direct beach access, a handful of boutique hotels and surf lodges are located just outside the medina walls along the beach road.

Essaouira is one of Morocco's more affordable coastal destinations. Budget travelers can get by on $35–$55 USD per day, covering a guesthouse in the medina, fresh fish at the harbour grills, and entrance fees. Mid-range travelers typically spend $80–$140 USD per day, including a comfortable riad, sit-down restaurant dining, and activities such as a guided medina tour or a kitesurfing lesson. Essaouira is also a popular and very affordable day trip from Marrakesh, approximately 2.5 hours away by road.

Essaouira is best known for its striking blue-and-white medina, its impressive 18th-century sea ramparts overlooking the Atlantic, and its reputation as Morocco's wind capital — earning it the nickname the Wind City of Africa.
