Rabat is widely regarded as the safest city in Morocco for tourists. As the royal capital and seat of government, it is well-policed and maintained to a high standard. The medina, the Kasbah of the Udayas, and the main tourist areas are all comfortable to explore independently, including for solo female travelers. The city's relatively small size and calm atmosphere make it one of the most stress-free destinations in the country.

Two days is enough time to cover Rabat's main highlights comfortably. The first day covers the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Kasbah of the Udayas with its Andalusian gardens. The second day is ideal for exploring the medina, visiting the Chellah necropolis, and browsing the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden. Travelers with a third day can take an easy day trip to Casablanca or explore the neighbouring city of Sale across the Bou Regreg river.

The best time to visit Rabat is between April and June or September and October, when the Atlantic coastal climate delivers warm sunny days without excessive heat. Rabat's position on the Atlantic keeps summer temperatures moderate compared to inland cities, rarely exceeding 28°C (82°F), making it a comfortable year-round destination. Winter months are mild and quiet, with occasional rain adding a lush green quality to the city's gardens and parks.

The Ville Nouvelle, Rabat's modern district, offers the widest selection of hotels ranging from international chains to boutique properties, with easy access to restaurants, transport links, and the city's main sights. For a more characterful experience, a small number of beautifully restored riads within the medina offer an atmospheric alternative. The Agdal and Hassan neighbourhoods are popular with business travelers and those who prefer a quieter residential setting within easy reach of the city centre.

Rabat is comparable in cost to Casablanca and generally slightly more expensive than Morocco's smaller cities. Budget travelers can expect to spend $50–$70 USD per day, covering a guesthouse or budget hotel, local restaurant meals, and entrance fees. Mid-range travelers typically spend $120–$180 USD per day, including a comfortable hotel, sit-down dining, and museum visits. Many of Rabat's most impressive sights, including the Hassan Tower esplanade and the Kasbah of the Udayas, are free to visit, making it an excellent value destination for independent travelers.
