Ouarzazate & Merzouga

Both Ouarzazate and Merzouga are safe and welcoming destinations for tourists. The region is well accustomed to international visitors and the local tourism infrastructure is well developed. The roads between the two cities are paved and in good condition, though a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for exploring more remote desert tracks around Merzouga. Standard travel precautions apply, and it is advisable to travel with a reputable operator for overnight desert excursions.

A minimum of three to four days is recommended to do justice to both destinations. One day in Ouarzazate covers Aït Benhaddou and the Atlas Film Studios. The drive from Ouarzazate to Merzouga through the Draa Valley takes approximately four to five hours and deserves a full day to enjoy the stops along the way. At least one to two nights in Merzouga allows for an evening camel trek into the dunes, a night in a desert camp under the stars, and a sunrise over Erg Chebbi.

The best time to visit Ouarzazate and Merzouga is between October and April, when desert temperatures are comfortable for exploration and outdoor activities. March and April bring pleasant warmth and occasional desert wildflowers. October and November offer golden light and ideal conditions for photography in the dunes. Summer temperatures in the Sahara regularly exceed 45°C (113°F) in July and August, making visits during this period challenging without careful preparation. Winter nights in the desert can be surprisingly cold, so warm layers are essential even for visitors arriving in December and January.

In Ouarzazate, the area around the Kasbah Taourirt in the city centre offers the most convenient base, with a good selection of riad-style hotels and kasbah guesthouses within easy reach of the main sights. For a more dramatic experience, staying at Aït Benhaddou itself puts you inside one of Morocco's most iconic landscapes. In Merzouga, the best accommodation is found along the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — a strip of desert camps and kasbah hotels that range from budget bivouacs to luxurious glamping experiences with private dune access.

The desert route suits a range of budgets, though transport between destinations adds to overall costs. Budget travelers can get by on $50–$70 USD per day, covering shared transport, basic guesthouses, and local meals. Mid-range travelers typically spend $120–$200 USD per day, including a private vehicle or organised tour, comfortable kasbah accommodation, and a standard desert camp experience. Luxury desert camps with private tents, gourmet dining, and exclusive dune access can cost $300 USD or more per night and represent some of the most memorable accommodation in all of Morocco.

Ouarzazate is best known for its role as Morocco's film capital — the Atlas Film Studios are among the largest in the world, and the surrounding landscape of kasbahs and desert valleys has provided the backdrop for dozens of major Hollywood productions. The UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a breathtaking fortified village rising from the banks of the Ounila River, is widely considered one of the most beautiful historic sites in Morocco. Merzouga is best known for the Erg Chebbi dunes, the most accessible and dramatic stretch of Sahara Desert in Morocco, where travelers from across the world come to experience a camel trek at sunset and a night sleeping under an extraordinary canopy of stars.
